Tyskfödd amerikansk anarkist. Född 1855 och död 1887. Emigrerade 1872 tillsammans med sin mor och fem syskon till USA. Han bosatte sig i Chicago och arbetade som möbelsnickare (upholsterer) involverade sig i facklig aktivitet, blev medlem i Socialistpartiet 1877 och sedermera redaktör för den anarkistiska tidningen Arbeiter Zeitung 1880.
Som svar på polisbrutalitet under 8-timmars strejkerna i början av maj skrev Spies ett flygblad, "Revenge! Workingmen to Arms!":
