Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov. Rysk arbetarförfattare. Född 28 mars 1868 i Nizjnij Novgorod, död 18 juni 1936 i Moskva. Född föräldralös, tog sig fram från jobb till jobb. Arbetade och vandrade över Ryssland under 5år. Tog namnet Gorkij (pseudonym som betyder bitter) när han arbetade som journalist på 1890-talet. Deltog i Ryska revolutionen. Slog igenom som författare runt sekelskiftet 1900, började aktivt delta i revolutionära fallanger av Socialdemokratiska Partiet, samarbetade när med Bolshevikerna. Fängslades en kort tid under den krossade revolutionen 1905. Gick i landsflykt till Italien 1906 men återkom efter att kollektiv amnesti utfärdats 1913. Stretade, och hade någon funktion, i den tidiga Sovjetstaten. Kritiserade förföljelser, våld och maktfullkomlighet. Återvände till Italien 1921-29, officiellt av hälsosjäl. Sattes i husarrest under stalinismens förföljelser 1934. Det har framförts teorier om att han mördades av staten. Stalin bar hans kista vid begravningen.
